Dr. Matthew Parker is a native of Lubbock, Texas. He attended public schools in Lubbock and Diboll, before his family settled in Carthage. It was in this small East Texas town that he first became interested in pursuing a medical career, while working as a delivery driver for a locally-owned pharmacy. After graduating from Carthage High School, Matt enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and left for boot camp in San Diego, California at the age of 17. He attended the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton, California, before being stationed on the East Coast – first at the Little Creek Amphibious Warfare Center near Norfolk, VA, and then at Camp LeJeune with the Second Marine Division. Matt left military service after four years, having been promoted to Corporal (E4). He returned to Carthage, where he enrolled at Panola College for one year, before transferring to Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, he was accepted to study Medicine at the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio. Incidentally, it was during his time in San Antonio that he met a beautiful Air Force Nurse Medic Trainee at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base who would eventually become his wife.
After graduating from University of Texas Medical School, now Doctor Parker trained in Family Medicine in Conroe Texas before moving to Birmingham in 2004. Since then, Dr. Parker has worked all over Alabama in numerous clinical settings. He spent nearly 3 years as Medical Director of St. Vincent’s Occupational Health Clinic in downtown Birmingham. He practiced extensively as a family medicine and urgent care specialist in clinics from Muscle Shoals to Dothan, and from Tuscaloosa to Alexander City. Dr. Parker is always researching and studying new methods of treatment for his patients. Over the years, his repertoire has expanded to include Bioidentical Hormone testing and treatment, Medical Weight Loss, Nutritional Medicine and Traditional American Herbal Medicine.
Since 2005, Dr. Parker and his wife Kelly have worked to find ways to improve the methods of health care delivery for the citizens of the Birmingham area. They formalized this commitment in 2008 with the formation of a professional corporation, Heritage Executive Medicine, which specialized in mobile medical services, including physician staffing of numerous area clinics, house calls, and executive medicine services. Finally, in 2011, after nearly 8 years living in North Shelby County, Matt and Kelly realized their dream of opening a clinic dedicated to providing exceptional primary care and preventive medicine services at a reasonable price. Heritage Medicine is the culmination of their life experiences and professional interests.
In his rare free time, Dr. Parker loves spending time with Kelly and their two sons – Will and Sam. He is a published writer, and has written articles for publications including The Birmingham Medical News and MyFamilyDoctor.com. He loves music, and has been a guitarist and singer for 25 years. He is also interested in outdoor photography, classic literature, and botany.
